The camper van received the same major updates as the previously debuted Transporter and Multivan in 6.1 versions.

Externally, the car can be distinguished from its predecessor by a new enlarged radiator grille, modified headlights, and a different front bumper. The updated Volkswagen California received an optimized living module with a new control unit for various systems.
California was also equipped with a new lighting system, new buttons for opening the sink, stove, and refrigerator, a dual USB connector, new aluminum handles on doors, and sliding doors instead of blinds in the rear cabinet. For Coast and Ocean versions, branded kitchen appliance sets are offered. Additionally, the tent built into the roof received special protection from sunlight.

In the cabin of the camper van, a fully digital Virtual Cockpit instrument panel and an improved multimedia system with access to new online services appeared. Also, a new color touchscreen monitor was installed on the ceiling. The Volkswagen California will use an electromechanical power steering, thanks to which the car will have new safety systems. Thus, the driver has access to lane keeping assist, parking assistance function, Cross Wind Assist system, and trailer movement assistant.
The new product received a 2.0-liter diesel engine with four cylinders. The camper is equipped with a seven-speed gearbox and an all-wheel drive system as an option.
