The show car is built on the basis of the GLE crossover, equipped with a hybrid powertrain and autopilot.

To create the prototype, the Mercedes-Benz GLE was equipped with advanced safety systems and autonomous driving features that are not yet found in production cars. The crossover is fitted with non-glaring adaptive LED headlights Digital Light with a resolution of more than two million pixels, a prototype child seat that monitors the baby's key physiological indicators, and a robot that automatically emerges from under the car and marks the accident site on the road with a triangle.

In addition, due to the peculiarities of the interior architecture, the placement of airbags has been changed: the driver's airbag is installed in the dashboard, as the steering wheel retracts in autopilot mode, and the side airbags are in the seat backs (in an accident, they literally embrace the passenger). The rear airbag has a tubular structure and is equipped with an experimental deployment mechanism.

The seat belts in the ESF 2019 are pre-tensioned when approaching corners, for example, if the car is moving too fast. The belt buckles are illuminated, the belts are heated, and their feeding mechanism is automated.

Finally, the list of active safety systems of the concept includes 360-degree protection against collisions with pedestrians and cyclists with automatic braking — and the GLE can also warn other road users of danger using light illumination.
