Under the hood of the Jetta GLI is a two-liter turbocharged unit borrowed from the hot hatch Golf GTI. The powertrain develops 231 horsepower (torque - 350 N·m) and is paired either with a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed robotic transmission with dual clutch.

Compared to the regular Jetta sedan, the GLI received an independent multi-link suspension instead of a torsion beam, a braking system with red calipers and 340 mm discs from the Golf GTI, as well as a front limited-slip differential and adaptive dampers.
In addition, the Volkswagen Jetta GLI is offered with a digital instrument cluster with a different graphic design and leather seats with red stitching.

It is worth noting that the standard new-generation Jetta debuted exactly a year ago, also in Detroit.
