The exterior of the new "three" will continue the development of the KODO design philosophy. It is expected that the production model will reflect some features of the Kai concept, which debuted in Tokyo in the fall of 2017. In particular, the car will get rear pillars of a similar configuration, a strong slope of the trunk lid, and compact LED optics at the rear.

In addition, the Mazda3 will be offered with a virtual instrument panel, where the driver can independently change the design and choose between several data display options.

In the engine lineup, according to preliminary data, units of the SkyActive-X series will appear. These engines will become the world's first production gasoline engines where fuel will ignite from compression rather than from a spark plug.

The working mixture in the cylinder will be able to self-ignite under pressure, similar to diesel installations. At the same time, the SkyActive-X will retain conventional spark plugs — they will be used in high-load modes.
