According to Autocar, in 2020 the BMW 3 Series lineup will lose the intermediate option between sedan and wagon: production of the 3-Series GT is being discontinued. Back in May last year, company CEO Harald Krüger, summing up the first quarter, stated that the Gran Turismo hatchback would not have a successor in the next generation. The reason is simple: sales of the 'three' GT significantly lagged behind crossovers.
The Gran Turismo, which combined features of a sedan and a wagon, turned out to be a niche product even within the 3 Series lineup. Stopping production of this model is part of BMW's cost-cutting program, which also includes reducing the number of available engines starting in 2021. In the near term, this will save the concern at least 12 billion euros.
