As it turned out, just before the volcano eruption, the Top Gear film crew was spotted in a bright red Toyota Hilux pickup truck climbing towards the crater.
Icelandic commentator Annalisa Kneejerk stated: "It has already been scientifically confirmed that Top Gear is to blame for all the troubles of the modern world, so the eruption that occurred just seven days after their arrival can hardly be called a coincidence. It is known that Jeremy Hammond, in one of his favorite Ferraris, which emit a huge amount of harmful substances into the atmosphere, drove straight into the main crater at a speed of about 160 km/h, which could well have triggered a geological catastrophe. Fortunately, I have never watched this show."
Representatives of the Top Gear show reacted ironically to this statement, noting that new filming of the popular automotive program is planned for May and its plot will be even more convoluted.
It is worth noting that the Top Gear team made this extreme climb on the Toyota Hilux not for fun, but to install measuring equipment at the top of the volcano, which scientists planned to use to track the approaching eruption and ash emissions.
The Toyota Hilux used in this expedition was modified by specialists from Arctic Trucks, a company that prepares vehicles for polar expeditions. The pickup was equipped with additional protection, a second pair of headlights, a winch, and huge 38-inch low-pressure tires, which allowed the vehicle to get through the snow and ice right to the fiery mouth of the volcano.
Top Gear and Toyota Hilux accused of causing volcanic eruption
On the pages of an Icelandic website, information appeared that the cause of such a massive eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano, which led to the cancellation of thousands of flights in Europe, was the Top Gear crew.
