Ford Mondeo: History and Facelift of the Fourth Generation

The Ford Mondeo is a D-segment passenger car produced by Ford's European division. The first generation was designed as a "world car" (the name comes from the Latin "Mundus" meaning "world"), developed by Ford divisions around the globe. The first Mondeo was sold in major world markets with virtually no changes.

The updated version of the fourth-generation Ford Mondeo debuted on August 25, 2010, at the Moscow International Automobile Salon. Exterior changes affected the hood, radiator grille, front and rear bumpers. LED daytime running lights appeared, and the design of the rear lights changed—they now also feature LEDs.

Standard equipment includes ABS, ESP, EBA, air conditioning, seven airbags, and a stereo system. Top versions received LED interior lighting, a new navigation system, and a Premium Sound System with an eight-channel 265 W amplifier, completely updated acoustics, and a large 17-liter subwoofer.

The options list includes a blind spot monitoring system, lane departure warning (unavailable in Ukraine for obvious reasons), a driver alertness assessment function that warns of dangerous fatigue levels, automatic high beams that turn off when oncoming cars are detected, and a navigation system. On cars with a manual transmission, a system that suggests optimal gear shifts, speed, and acceleration dynamics is very useful.

The updated models are equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged EcoBoost engine producing 200 and 240 hp, as well as a 2.2-liter Duratorq TDCi turbodiesel with 200 hp. Additionally, a 2.0-liter Duratorq TDCi turbodiesel is available in versions with 115 (300 Nm), 140 (320 Nm), and 163 (340 Nm) hp.

Gasoline engines are paired with a 6-speed PowerShift dual-clutch automated transmission. Among diesel engines, the classic 6-speed manual is popular.

Passive safety features include an ultra-rigid body frame that reduces deformation of the safety cell and a new driver knee airbag. Active safety systems include an anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), an electronic stability program (ESP), and adaptive cruise control (ACC) with a forward alert (FA) system.
