Ford F-150: history of a legendary pickup
Ford F-150 is a full-size pickup that, over more than sixty years of production, has become the best-selling model in the brand's history. It is part of the F-Series family and its most popular version. The name is simple: "F" stands for Ford, and the number "150" indicates a payload capacity of 1500 kg.
First generation (1948)
The first pickup in the series, designed specifically for rural US residents, rolled off the assembly line in 1948. The model was produced in several body styles, and its chassis was even used for school buses.
Second generation (1953)
In 1953, the second generation of the F-Series hit the market. The vehicle received an updated design and technical improvements. It was from this generation that the family models acquired their familiar indices: F-100, F-200, F-350, and so on.
Third generation (1957)
Production of the third generation started in 1957. Depending on the cargo bed side design, pickups were divided into FlareSide and StyleSide versions. Additionally, starting with this generation, all-wheel-drive modifications were equipped with a "native" all-wheel-drive system rather than being installed at a third-party facility as before.
Fourth generation (1961)
The fourth generation was produced from 1961. Besides stylistic changes, the model for the first time received a unibody construction combining the cab and cargo bed. The chassis was also improved. And from 1965, Ford began producing a four-door version of the F-Series.
Fifth and sixth generations (1967 and 1973)
The fifth generation, introduced in 1967, was remembered for its updated exterior and interior. The sixth generation, released in 1973, was rich in technical innovations. The vehicle featured front disc brakes and coil springs in the front suspension. Changes also occurred in appearance: square headlights began to be installed. It was in this generation that the Ford F-150 model debuted.
Seventh generation (1980)
The seventh generation of the F-Series went into production in 1980. The family received a new platform, a body with improved aerodynamics, and more economical engines. From 1982, a new logo — the "blue oval" — began to appear on the pickup's radiator grille.
Subsequent generations (1987–2009)
From 1987 to 2009, four more generations of the F-Series were released. Each differed in design, technology, and dimensions. During this period, pickups transitioned from the mid-size to the full-size category. The twelfth generation Ford F-150, introduced in 2009, is characterized by the appearance of special versions, including the F-150 Raptor with enhanced off-road capabilities. Externally, the Raptor version is distinguished by the brand name on the radiator grille.
