Audi Q3 is a compact urban crossover that joined the Q-model family, which already included the mid-size Q5 and full-size Q7. The letter Q in the name indicates its belonging to Audi's crossover lineup, while the number "3" denotes the European C-class.
The decision to produce this compact sporty crossover was driven by the presence of the competitor BMW X1 on the market. The parent brand Volkswagen already had the Tiguan, a classmate of the X1, but it fell short of the "Bavarian" in terms of premium quality. The concern needed a premium crossover, which became the Audi Q3. Development of the model began in the mid-2000s. The first series of prototypes was ready by 2008, and they underwent road tests in Europe and the USA.
The car is built on the global Volkswagen PQ35 platform, and many of its components and assemblies are unified with the Volkswagen Tiguan and Skoda Yeti.
The production version was shown in April 2011, and assembly line production began in July of the same year at the Volkswagen plant in Martorell, Spain. The exterior is designed in an original style, combining features of the Q5 and Q7 models, as well as the Cross Coupé concept.
