Properly set ignition timing is the foundation of stable engine operation. Any, even slight, deviation from optimal parameters threatens overheating, excessive fuel consumption, power loss, and detonation. Below, we will examine the difference between early and late ignition, the signs that indicate the setting is off, and which way to turn the distributor to correct the situation.
What early and late ignition mean
Early ignition is when the spark in the cylinder ignites the fuel mixture before the piston reaches top dead center. As a result, the piston receives a shock load, knocking appears in the engine, part wear accelerates, and temperature rises. Late ignition is when the spark occurs after passing TDC. Then the mixture burns out as the piston begins to move down, resulting in power loss, overheating of the exhaust manifold, and increased fuel consumption.
How to recognize incorrect ignition:
- With early ignition:
- knocking and detonation are heard during acceleration;
- the engine runs unevenly ("misfiring");
- overheating is possible;
- a hot engine is hard to start.
- With late ignition:
- acceleration is sluggish, the engine lacks power;
- popping sounds from the carburetor or muffler are heard;
- the exhaust system overheats;
- a cold engine starts poorly.
Which way to turn the distributor: instructions
If the car is equipped with a classic ignition distributor, you can adjust it yourself.
1. Loosen the distributor lock
First, loosen the nut that holds the distributor. It should turn without effort but not wobble.
2. Warm up the engine
The engine must be warmed to operating temperature — about 80–90°C.
3. Turn the distributor:
- If detonation or knocking occurs during acceleration — the ignition is set too early. Then turn the distributor counterclockwise, shifting it toward later ignition.
- If the engine lacks power, responds sluggishly to the gas pedal, and popping sounds are heard — the ignition is late. In this case, rotate the distributor clockwise to make the ignition earlier.
4. Adjusting "by ear"
The optimal position is when the engine runs smoothly, without vibrations, does not overheat, and responds lively to pressing the gas pedal. If you briefly press the "gas" — the RPM should rise quickly and also drop quickly. This is a sign that the setting is close to ideal.
Method with a test lamp (for those without a tachometer)
- Remove the central wire from the coil and connect a 12V lamp: one contact to the coil terminal, the second to ground.
- Turn on the ignition and slowly rotate the distributor.
- At the moment the lamp lights up, you have reached the ignition point. Secure the distributor in this position and check how the engine runs.
Now you know which way to turn the distributor for early or late ignition and how to identify the symptoms of incorrect adjustment. Adjustment requires caution, but even without professional equipment, you can achieve a decent result. The main thing is to carefully monitor the engine's behavior and not turn the distributor too sharply. If necessary, it is better to consult a specialist or use a strobe light for more precise fine-tuning.
