Specialists emphasized that a new Hyundai Sonata was taken to create the prototype, since the design of this platform from the very beginning provided for the possibility of installing components for autonomous control.
“Currently, the first self-driving Sonata is undergoing tests in a closed area and will soon go to the capital's streets. We intend to continue experiments with other cars from the current Hyundai and Kia lineup,” said Dmitry Polishchuk, who heads the self-driving car direction at Yandex.
Later, Hyundai Sonata sedans equipped with autopilot systems will join Yandex's fleet of unmanned vehicles. Earlier, the company announced that by the end of this year, about a hundred such cars will take to the roads of Moscow.
Currently, 50 units based on the Toyota Prius have already been assembled, with five of them participating in capital tests as part of the project to introduce vehicles with artificial intelligence.
