The developers claim that this solution will allow drivers to interact with other road users.
The new technology, built on matrix LEDs, combines 30 thousand individual elements. These elements are capable of forming various images on the road surface — for example, reminding the driver of the vehicle's dimensions, indicating the trajectory of a maneuver, and marking obstacles. The rear lights, in turn, project red stripes onto the asphalt, signaling to other motorists that the car is leaving a parking spot.
A similar development was previously announced by Mercedes-Maybach — such optics were shown at the Geneva Motor Show. Each digital headlight contains over a million micromirrors. The system also includes chips and sensors capable of recognizing other road users.
Based on the collected data, the system adjusts the light beams of the headlights so as not to blind drivers of other cars, as well as pedestrians and cyclists. In addition, the technology takes into account the steering wheel angle and the distance to the vehicle ahead.
Moreover, such optics can display various symbols on the road. For example, reproduce a road sign, signal a turn, or illuminate a pedestrian crossing area.
