The first autumn rains can reveal car problems that practically didn't bother the driver in summer. Before the rainy season, Autoportal experts advise checking tires, wipers, brakes, lighting, and the water drainage system.
Car malfunctions in autumn: what manifests after the first rains
Wet asphalt and reduced visibility create conditions under which worn or faulty car components begin to manifest themselves much more noticeably.
1. Worn tires drain water worse
On dry asphalt, tread wear may not be as noticeable. During rain, the grooves drain water from the contact patch worse. The source advises considering tire replacement already at a remaining tread depth of 3-4 mm.
2. Old wipers leave water on the glass
Worn wiper rubber loses elasticity, so during rain the wipers may leave streaks, miss certain areas of the glass, or work with squeaking.
"If the blades leave streaks, miss water... it's time to change them," notes the author of the material, Oleksiy Astapov.
3. Brake problems become more noticeable on wet roads
Before the rainy season, it is recommended to check brake pads, discs, and hoses, as well as the system for fluid leaks. A friction layer of pads 2-3 mm thick may be a signal for replacement, although the acceptable indicator depends on the specific model.
4. Faulty headlights worsen visibility
During rain, clouded lenses, incorrect light adjustment, and moisture inside the headlights become more noticeable. In the dark, these problems reduce the effectiveness of road lighting.
5. Clogged drains cause water accumulation
Leaves and dirt can block drainage channels, particularly under the windshield. If water is not drained properly, it can accumulate and get into the cabin or the car's electronic components.
