Fuel consumption depends not only on the engine, road conditions, and the technical condition of the car. The daily habits of the driver himself can also make the car burn more gasoline or diesel.
Mistakes behind the wheel that make you visit gas stations more often
Even habitual actions behind the wheel can noticeably affect fuel consumption. The most important factors are driving style, tire condition, use of car equipment, and excess weight.
1. Aggressive acceleration and braking increase consumption by up to 40%
Constantly alternating between sharp pressing on the gas and braking instead of smooth driving can increase fuel consumption by almost 30-40%. This mode is especially common when driving in the city.
«Smooth acceleration and early speed reduction help avoid unnecessary fuel burning. The difference becomes especially noticeable during daily city trips», notes author Oleksii Astapov.
2. Low tire pressure makes the engine work harder
Even slightly deflated tires increase rolling resistance. This causes the engine to work with a greater load and consume more fuel. Tire pressure should be maintained at the level recommended by the car manufacturer.
3. Air conditioning and open windows increase fuel consumption
Constantly running air conditioning creates an additional load on the engine. Open windows can also increase consumption: at speeds above 60 km/h, they worsen aerodynamics and increase air resistance.

4. Extra 50 kg in the trunk increases consumption by 1-2%
Unnecessary tools, items, and other cargo are better not to carry constantly. Every additional 50 kg of car mass can increase fuel consumption by approximately 1-2%.
5. Idling burns fuel without covering kilometers
Modern cars do not need prolonged warming up. Fuel is also consumed while waiting with the engine running. If the car will be stationary for more than 1-2 minutes, it is more advisable to turn off the engine.
