At Audi, Peter Mertens will replace Stefan Knirsch, who was dismissed in connection with the diesel scandal at Volkswagen. It turned out that Knirsch knew about the manipulations but concealed this information.
Mertens spent five years at Volvo and was at the origins of the creation of the Drive-E engine lineup. Before that, the German specialist worked at General Motors, Daimler, and Jaguar Land Rover.
