A 23-year-old Englishman, Ian Mardenborough, who was piloting a Nissan GT-R Nismo, lost control of the car in the Flugplatz corner (the runway), causing it to rear up, travel several meters, and fly over the barrier.
Unfortunately, spectators were present at that spot... One person was killed, and several others sustained injuries of varying severity. The driver himself was unharmed but was taken to the hospital for examination. After the incident, the race was stopped.
