A van transporting cash "dropped" 35 million Hong Kong dollars (about $4.5 million) along the way. Eyewitnesses, apparently, perceived the incident as a Christmas gift and began to pick up the scattered banknotes in a crowd. By the time police arrived, 15 million Hong Kong dollars (about $2 million) had already disappeared.

According to witnesses, about thirty people were picking up the banknotes. In total, the van contained 525 million Hong Kong dollars ($68 million). Law enforcement officers appealed to citizens to return the money, warning that spending these funds for personal needs would be considered theft.

According to preliminary data, the incident occurred due to a malfunction of the car door lock.
