The results of the first half of 2014 showed a 15% drop in sales. During this time, 378.6 thousand cars were imported into the country for a total of 7.3 billion US dollars.
But exports even increased - by 9.2%. 67.5 thousand cars were exported from the country with a total value of 748.4 million US dollars.
It is worth noting that the Russian authorities are considering the possibility of introducing retaliatory sanctions that should hit foreign automobile companies. What these sanctions are, and against which countries and companies, is still unknown. It is also unknown whether automakers with assembly plants in Russia will suffer. Although the first prerequisites for a worsening situation are already there - Volkswagen has already felt a decline in sales.
Prime Minister Medvedev stated: "We are potentially ready to introduce protective measures in aircraft construction, shipbuilding, the automotive industry, and other sectors."
