The Mazda CX-9 received the same 2.5-liter turbocharged engine, but now its torque reaches 434 N·m — 14 N·m more than its predecessor. Power remains the same at 254 hp.

Among the electronic assistants, the Off-road traction assist system has appeared, designed for off-road driving and simulating the operation of a differential lock. Also, the crossover in the base trim has acquired the proprietary G-Vectoring Control traction control function.

Changes also affected the interior. The car is now offered with a new nine-inch touchscreen display for the multimedia system. In addition, two separate seats instead of a solid bench have become available for the second row.
