The sedan is built on the front-wheel-drive platform with a transverse engine layout FAAR, which is also already used by the BMW 1-Series. The length of the sedan is 4526 mm, and the width is 1800 millimeters. The wheelbase size is 2670 millimeters. The trunk volume of the 2-Series Gran Coupe is 430 liters. At the same time, the rear seat backrest can be folded in a 40:20:40 ratio.

The design of the car resembles the M235i. The 2-Series Gran Coupe received thin LED headlights, aggressive bumpers, a spoiler, and large air intakes. The car can be equipped with wheel rims ranging from 16 to 19 inches in diameter. Inside, the new model features a digital instrument panel and a large touchscreen display for the multimedia system.

The four-door is equipped with a 1.5-liter gasoline turbo engine with three cylinders. The power of the unit is 140 horsepower. The engine works in conjunction with a 7-speed Steptronic "robot". Customers will also be offered a 2.0-liter gasoline turbo engine with an output of 306 horsepower. Such a unit works in conjunction with an 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. Acceleration to 100 km/h for such a sedan takes 4.9 seconds, and with the M Performance package — 4.8 seconds.

In addition, the 2-Series Gran Coupe is also offered with a 2.0-liter diesel engine with a power of 190 horsepower. In the USA, the BMW 228i xDrive version (231 hp) with a two-liter turbo engine and all-wheel drive will be sold. For the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, three suspension options are available: standard, M Sport (with a reduced ground clearance by 10 mm), and adaptive suspension (with two stiffness options: Comfort and Sport). M Sport steering and M Sport braking system are available as an option.
World sales of the new model are scheduled for March 2020. The main competitor of the car is called the Mercedes-Benz CLA.
