The new unit is planned to be installed in the A45 hatchback, the CLA 45 sedan and estate, as well as the GLB 45 crossover.

The base version of the engine with the internal designation "M 139" produces 387 hp and 480 Nm of torque, while in the more powerful S version, the "four-cylinder" can develop 421 horsepower and 500 newton-meters. This 16-valve engine is equipped with twin-scroll turbocharging with an electronically controlled wastegate, a pair of overhead camshafts, and an electronically driven water pump.

According to representatives of the German brand, this power unit is the most powerful production four-cylinder engine in history. However, other automakers have also produced more powerful "fours." For example, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution had an FX-440 MR modification with a two-liter engine producing 440 hp, but only 40 such cars were built.

The first model to receive the new engine will be the hot hatchback Mercedes-AMG A45. It will be paired with a specially calibrated eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.
