The sixth-generation model is based on the new modular CD6 platform, which will also underpin a restyled version of the Explorer under the Lincoln brand, with a more luxurious finish. Most of the new Explorer's body panels are made of steel.

The crossover is 5050 mm long, 2004 mm wide, and 1778 mm high. The wheelbase is 3025 mm. The design has become more aggressive. The Explorer features a new grille, different air intakes, and redesigned headlights. The maximum towed trailer weight has increased to 2540 kg.

The crossover's cabin seats seven passengers. The model is equipped with an upgraded SYNC 3 infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support and an 8-inch touchscreen. A digital instrument cluster is available for an extra charge. The trunk volume is 515 liters.

The new Explorer comes with an emergency braking system and lane-keeping assist. Adaptive cruise control, parking assistance, surround-view cameras, a premium B&O audio system with 14 speakers, and a wireless smartphone charger are available as options.

The engine lineup includes the same 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder, which in the current model develops 284 horsepower. Now the power of this engine has been increased to 300 hp.

The top 3.5-liter unit has been replaced by a three-liter bi-turbo V6 producing 370 hp. All engines are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Later, the crossover will receive a hybrid version. Such a powertrain has already debuted on the police version of the model.

Sales of the new Ford Explorer are expected to start this summer. In the US, prices for the new model start at $32,765. Production will be set up at a plant in Chicago.
