British media, citing Mazda's chief designer Ikuo Maeda, report that the new model will be compact and consistent with the brand's current lineup style.
"We don't want our electric car to resemble a refrigerator, as some other eco-friendly cars do," Maeda said.
By 2021, Mazda intends to launch production of plug-in hybrids. Their powertrains will likely combine an electric motor and a rotary engine.
For the Japanese manufacturer, the development of "clean" technologies is a priority, so the company plans to reduce the total emissions of its vehicles by 50% by 2030 and by 90% by 2050. It is possible that Mazda will use Toyota's developments — a partnership agreement between the companies was signed in August last year.
