The van's dimensions reach 5048 mm in length, 1976 mm in width, and 1963 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3300 mm. The vehicle's payload capacity is up to 800 kg.

The Volkswagen I.D. Buzz Cargo is equipped with an electric motor producing 150 kW (200 hp), mounted on the rear axle, providing a top speed of 160 km/h. Battery packs with capacities of 48 or 111 kWh are available for the vehicle. In the version with the larger battery, the prototype can travel up to 550 km without recharging. A special system allows replenishing 80% of the energy reserve in just a quarter of an hour.

Serial production of the new generation Volkswagen electric vehicles is scheduled for 2020. The first model in the I.D. lineup will be a compact hatchback, followed by a crossover, a minivan, and possibly a flagship sedan. By 2025, the German manufacturer intends to produce more than 20 models with electric powertrains.
