In the summer period, headlights should only be used in the dark, but during late autumn, winter, and early spring, it is prescribed to use lights even during the day. This rule, specified in clause 9.8 of the Traffic Rules, was introduced for a reason. With the onset of cold weather, days become shorter and visibility conditions worsen. As a result, the risk of accidents increases. In such conditions, it is very important that the vehicle is better marked on the road.

In case of non-compliance with this rule, patrol police may stop the vehicle and issue a warning (and also check documents). According to the Administrative Code, this rule falls under Article 125 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses, meaning no monetary penalty is provided. Nevertheless, in some cases, police still issue a fine ranging from 425 to 510 UAH.

The use of fog lights or parking lights instead of daytime running lights or low beam is prohibited.
