Nissan Motor continues to expand the use of continuously variable transmissions. Since rebuilding this unit after the warranty period can be quite expensive, and in some cases it has to be replaced entirely, the manufacturer has decided to shoulder part of the financial burden for owners.
According to the official statement, the factory warranty on CVT transmissions is doubled: from 5 to 10 years, and the mileage limit from 60,000 to 120,000 miles. The press release specifically mentions miles, as the document was prepared by the company's North American division; when converted to kilometers, the values will likely be rounded to 100,000 and 200,000 km respectively. If the program applies not only to the US and Canadian markets, clarifications will follow later.
Additionally, it has been announced that the extended warranty obligations automatically apply not only to new cars but also to vehicles already in use with CVT. Nissan Motor also plans to reimburse owners for previously performed CVT repairs if they now fall under the new warranty terms. To do this, it is recommended to contact official dealers and fill out a special form. It is claimed that payment is due even to those who have already sold or scrapped the vehicle — the main thing is that the repair was paid for out of pocket.
Obviously, such an initiative will cost the company significant funds, but it is becoming increasingly justified, since for many models of the brand, the CVT is the only available type of transmission.
