According to him, the reason is the new Euro-7 environmental standards. They introduce very strict restrictions for internal combustion engines.

However, this decision does not mean an imminent abandonment of gasoline and diesel engines. Existing engines will continue to be improved, but not all. For example, the V10 Audi R8 and Lamborghini Huracan will soon cease production.

Of course, in the end Audi will fully transition to producing electric vehicles, but this will not happen immediately. Especially considering that in many countries eco-standards are not as strict as in the EU – for them, gasoline and diesel models will continue to be produced even after they are abandoned at home in Germany.

Nevertheless, by 2025 the brand's lineup will already include 20 electric models. Some of them (like the Audi Q4 e-tron crossover) will be built on the Volkswagen MEB platform.
