L-series engines with a displacement of 6.2 liters first appeared in 1959 on the Bentley S2, a twin of the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II. During production, the engine was updated several times, and the last modernization was timed to coincide with the release of the Mulsanne model: the engine received a variable valve timing system, new turbochargers, and increased peak torque.

The final version of the engine produced 537 hp (1100 Nm) and accelerated the three-ton sedan to 305 km/h, reaching 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds.
