The reason was that the truck transporting the cars could not "squeeze" under the bridge – the driver simply did not account for the height of his trailer and the structure. As a result, the cars on the upper "deck" of the platform were crushed...
Witnesses of the incident said they watched what was happening as if in slow motion. It was immediately obvious that the truck would not pass in height, but its driver kept driving forward as if nothing had happened.
