Sales of new diesel cars are growing

Despite the overall decline in the number of diesel vehicle registrations, the market for new models shows positive dynamics. During 2024, Ukrainians purchased 17.8 thousand new cars with diesel engines — this is 28% more compared to the previous year. Accordingly, the share of such vehicles in the market increased from 22.8% to 25.6%.

Among new diesel cars, buyers are most interested in crossovers and pickups. The undisputed favorite is the Renault Duster, which significantly outperforms its rivals.

Top five leaders among new diesel cars in 2024 in Ukraine:

  1. Renault Duster — 5,246 units sold.
  2. Volkswagen Touareg — 1,217 cars.
  3. Toyota Hilux — 1,072 vehicles.
  4. Peugeot Landtrek — 926 units.
  5. Skoda Kodiaq — 774 cars.

The secondary market for diesel cars is losing ground

The situation with used diesel cars is the opposite: here demand has noticeably decreased. In 2024, 55.2 thousand such cars were registered, which is 22% less than a year earlier. The market share of used diesels fell from 30% to 24.8%.

Among cars with mileage, the Renault brand still has the greatest popularity in Ukraine.

Top models on the secondary market for diesel cars:

  1. Renault Megane — 5,021 registrations.
  2. Skoda Octavia — 3,924 units.
  3. Volkswagen Passat — 3,731 cars.
  4. Nissan Qashqai — 2,943 vehicles.
  5. Volkswagen Golf — 2,050 units.

Thus, the Ukrainian diesel car market is currently developing unevenly. On the one hand, sales of new cars are growing — largely due to government procurement and corporate clients, in particular the agricultural sector. On the other hand, interest in used cars is gradually fading.
