Why did this situation arise? Specialists at Bid History Cars, who analyze auction sales of crashed cars in the USA, found out: the RAV4 is hugely popular in the States themselves (for Americans, it is a truly iconic model), so prices for it are quite high. This applies even to insurance auctions, where, as is known, already written-off vehicles are sold.
What is the cost of a Toyota RAV4 from the USA
For example, in early 2021, Toyota RAV4s went under the hammer at IAA and Copart sites at the following prices:
- Toyota RAV4 2016 – $7,500 (average);
- Toyota RAV4 2017, 2018 – $7,200-8,200 (average);
- Toyota RAV4 2019 – $12,000 (average);
- Toyota RAV4 2020, 2021 – from $12,450 to $19,000.
Thus, Ukrainians obviously have little sense in bringing "Ravs" from across the ocean, because taking into account turnkey repairs, they will cost a pretty penny. For example, the Jeep Renegade, which is quite in demand on the secondary market of Ukraine, cost from $2,400 to $4,200 in 2020 (models of 2015-2017). Approximately in the same price range were the popular VW Passat, Ford Fusion and Kia Optima.
Moreover, the RAV4 does not appear at auctions that often — older examples end up at insurance auctions in quantities of up to a couple of hundred units per month, while fresh ones are generally in single digits (no more than 50).
It is worth clarifying that the Toyota RAV4 in the USA is available with the following engines: a 2.0-liter petrol engine with 150 hp, a 2.4-liter unit with 184 hp, as well as turbodiesels with a volume of 2.0 and 2.2 liters, producing 124 and 150 hp, respectively. In addition, there are modifications with a 2.5-liter engine with 185 hp — these are the ones that most often end up at Copart and IAAI sites.
