The brand's engineers managed to bring the engine into compliance with new environmental requirements, and the Mercedes-Benz S 600 in the W223 body will retain the famous power unit.
Talk that Mercedes-Benz will completely abandon the V12 intensified after the presentation of the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 with a V-shaped "eight." The GTSpirit editorial team contacted the head of Daimler for clarification on the future of twelve-cylinder engines at the Guangzhou show, and Kallenius confirmed that at least in the new S-Class lineup, the iconic engine will remain.
A year earlier, Mercedes-AMG head Tobias Moers said that the V12 would no longer be installed on AMG models, so most likely, the twelve-cylinder unit will remain only in the "six hundred" and in the Mercedes-Maybach model range. Details about the new engine are not yet disclosed: perhaps Daimler specialists added an electric component to the current M279, but it is also possible that they created a new engine based on the four-liter V8.
The new generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class is expected to appear in 2020. The premiere of the top versions of Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Maybach will take place no earlier than 2021. According to spy shots and insider information, the flagship sedan will receive a large tablet for the multimedia system, switch to hybrid powertrains, and be equipped with third-level autopilot.
