In the first quarter of 2019, the Volkswagen Group allocated about one billion euros for legal expenses. The bulk of these funds went to settling the consequences of "dieselgate" on the American market. In addition, about 60 thousand lawsuits have been filed against Volkswagen in Germany.

Thus, in the summer of 2018, the court of Braunschweig ordered the concern to pay a fine of one billion euros for falsifying data on the volume of harmful emissions. Volkswagen accepted this decision without appeal.

The story of the deliberate understatement of toxicity indicators of diesel engines became public in the fall of 2015. For the German automaker, this scandal resulted in large fines, a change of management, and massive recall campaigns in many countries. The proceedings related to the VW diesel scandal are not completed to this day.
