Mercedes-Benz Vito: history of the model range
Mercedes-Benz Vito is a minibus that the German manufacturer equips with a wide range of options for various applications.
First generation (W638, 1995)
Production of the first-generation cargo minivan began in late 1995 in the Spanish city of Vitoria. Already in 1996, the model was awarded the title "Best Van of the Year". Initially, two versions were offered: an all-metal van with a payload of up to 925 kg and a nine-seat minibus (including driver) with a payload of 740 kg. All vehicles were equipped with diesel engines producing 79 and 98 hp, as well as petrol engines with 129 and 143 hp.
In 1996, at the Geneva Motor Show, an improved comfort version debuted, receiving the separate name V-Class. It featured changes to certain exterior and interior elements, as well as technical refinements to enhance comfort. Sales of this variant began in 1997.
In 1998, the vehicles were updated: a line of CDI diesel engines with Common Rail direct injection system appeared. The interior equipment and cabin design were also refreshed.
Second generation (W639, 2003)
In 2003, completely new Vito and Viano models (W639) were introduced. They received additional safety systems: ESP, ASR, electronic brake force distribution, and emergency brake assist. The driver's front airbag became standard; an optional front passenger airbag and side airbags were available.
In 2010, the model underwent a facelift: the appearance of the headlights and radiator grille was changed, and the equipment level was expanded.
Engines and transmission
For the Mercedes-Benz Vito, a wide range of engines is offered: three Euro-4 diesel engines with 88, 109, and 150 hp, as well as two petrol V6 engines with 190 and 218 hp. By default, all diesel engines are paired with a six-speed manual transmission, while petrol engines come with an automatic. Optionally, an automatic transmission can be ordered for the diesel engine as well.
Suspension and brakes
The front and rear suspension of the Vito is independent. The front features MacPherson struts, while the rear has control arms with coil springs and separate shock absorbers. The braking system includes disc brakes on all wheels: ventilated at the front and solid at the rear.
In Ukraine, all modifications of the Mercedes-Benz Vito have been sold since 2003.
