The two-door CL-Class coupe, whose name stands for Coupe Leicht ("lightweight coupe"), was built on the platform of the flagship S-Class sedan. Initially, the model was called SEC, later S Coupe, and received its current designation only in 1996. At the time of writing, the third generation was in production, debuting in 2006.
