What you need to prepare
To lubricate the KAMAZ steering knuckle, you will need:- a grease gun for applying lubricant (manual or pneumatic);
- lithium or universal grease, for example, Litol-24;
- clean rags and a brush to remove dirt;
- a jack and wheel chocks to secure the vehicle.
Preparatory steps
- Place the vehicle on a level surface.
Engage the parking brake and place chocks under the wheels to prevent the vehicle from moving. - Raise the front with a jack.
Lift the side you plan to work on. - Clean the area around the knuckle.
Use a brush and rags to remove dirt and dust, especially near the grease fittings.
Procedure for lubricating the knuckle on KAMAZ
- Locate the grease fittings.
On the truck, they are located at the top and bottom of the knuckle — near the kingpins. It is through them that the lubricant enters the interior. - Attach the grease gun.
Place the nozzle onto the fitting and smoothly apply the grease. - Monitor the exit of the old compound.
When fresh grease appears from the seals or at the edges of the kingpin, this is a signal that the cavity is filled. You can stop applying. - Do the same with the other grease fitting.
Treat the lower point in the same way. - Turn the wheels in both directions.
This allows the grease to distribute evenly over the internal parts.
Features of lubricating the knuckle on UAZ and "Bukhanka"
The principle here is the same as on KAMAZ, but there are differences:- On UAZ, the knuckle is often divided into separate cavities, which are filled not with thick grease but with transmission oil or special fluids for kingpins.
- On the UAZ "Bukhanka", grease is applied through a plug or grease fitting at the top of the knuckle. During maintenance, it is important to monitor the condition of the seals — if they leak, the grease will quickly escape.
- After applying the grease, it is worth driving a little so that the compound spreads over all elements.
Maintenance frequency
On KAMAZ, the kingpins and knuckles should be lubricated every 10–15 thousand kilometers, as well as after every full chassis wash.For UAZ vehicles, the interval is shorter — about once every 5–7 thousand kilometers, especially if the vehicle often drives off-road.
Useful recommendations
- Use only reliable lubricants that are resistant to high temperatures and moisture.
- During work, check the dust boots and seals to prevent dirt from getting inside.
- If the grease does not go in, the fitting is likely clogged. Then it needs to be cleaned or replaced.
Now you understand how to lubricate the KAMAZ steering knuckle and how to perform a similar procedure on UAZ or UAZ "Bukhanka". Timely lubrication ensures long-lasting suspension operation, smooth ride, and precise steering. The operation is simple but extremely important, especially when the vehicle operates under heavy conditions.
