To figure out what exactly is the source of the problem — the measuring element itself or the electrical circuit, let's take a detailed look at how to check the fuel level sensor with a multimeter, and provide specific examples for common cars — VAZ 2101, 2106, 2109, 2110, 2114 and Chevrolet Aveo.
Operating principle of the fuel level sensor
In most cases, the fuel level sensor (FLS) is a rheostat — an element with variable resistance. A float, rigidly connected to a lever, changes its position depending on the volume of gasoline in the tank, thereby changing the resistance value. The instrument panel receives this signal and converts it into needle movement. When the contact is broken or the rheostat wears out, the readings cease to be accurate.
Method for checking the fuel level sensor with a multimeter
Required tools:
- a multimeter switched to resistance measurement mode;
- ensuring access to the sensor connector;
- in some cases — removing the tank or removing the rear seat (depends on the specific model).

On the "kopeyka", access to the sensor is opened from the trunk. The multimeter check procedure is standard: the resistance should be in the range of approximately 7-10 Ohms (empty tank) to 250-300 Ohms (full).
VAZ 2106
The design and operating principle are similar, access to the sensor is also through the trunk. During diagnostics, it is important to monitor the smoothness of resistance change — otherwise the gauge needle will twitch.
VAZ 2109
On the "devyatka", the sensor is combined with the fuel pump (depending on the year of manufacture). It can be checked directly through the hatch located under the rear seat. Normal readings: about 5-10 Ohms (empty) and up to 250-350 Ohms (full tank).
VAZ 2110 and 2114
On these models, the sensor is also integrated into the fuel pump module. The multimeter check is performed similarly: it is necessary to monitor the smooth change in resistance when moving the float. If the values "jump", this indicates wear of the rheostat tracks.
Chevrolet Aveo
On the "Aveo", access to the sensor is provided through a hatch under the rear seat. The resistance varies on average from 40 Ohms (empty tank) to 250 Ohms (full). The check method is the same: the smoothness of change and stability of readings are assessed.
Additional diagnostic methods
- Checking the instrument panel. Perhaps the problem lies not in the sensor, but in the gauge itself. To check, you need to short-circuit the wires going to the sensor: the needle should sharply deflect upward. If there is no reaction — the fault is in the instrument panel.
- Checking the wiring. Oxidized contacts or damaged wire insulation often cause incorrect readings.
- Visual inspection. The float may crack and start letting gasoline inside — in this case it sinks, and the sensor shows an empty tank.
