Proper installation of the ignition distributor directly affects engine stability, fuel consumption, and ease of starting. Whether it's a
VAZ 2106,
VAZ 2109,
Tavria, or
Audi 80, the basic adjustment principle is the same. Let's look step by step at how to perform this operation yourself.
When distributor adjustment is required
- After installing a new distributor or its cap.
- After a major overhaul of the power unit.
- When detonation, unstable operation, or jerks during acceleration occur.
- After removing the camshaft or elements of the valve timing mechanism.
Installing the distributor on a VAZ 2106
- Preparatory stage. The car is secured with the handbrake, and the gearshift lever is moved to neutral.
- Finding top dead center. By rotating the crankshaft by the pulley nut clockwise, we align the mark on the pulley with the zero mark on the timing cover. This means the piston of the first cylinder is at TDC.
- Rotor orientation. After removing the distributor cap, we check that the rotor points to the contact corresponding to the first cylinder.
- Adjustment. After loosening the distributor mount, we rotate its housing in both directions until the contacts open exactly at TDC.
- Securing. We tighten the fastener and check whether the engine starts.
Installation features on a VAZ 2109
The process is similar to the "six," but it should be noted: on carburetor and injection versions of the "nine," the orientation of the distributor slot may differ.
- Set the crankshaft according to the marks.
- Make sure the rotor points to the contact of the first cylinder.
- Rotate the distributor housing until the contacts open.
- Secure the distributor and check the engine at idle and under load.
Installing the distributor on an Audi 80
On gasoline versions of the Audi 80, the procedure is as follows:
- The piston of the first cylinder is set to TDC on the compression stroke.
- The mark on the pulley must coincide with the mark on the timing belt cover.
- The distributor is installed so that the rotor points to the contact of the first cylinder.
- The distributor housing is turned for precise ignition timing adjustment.
- The mounting bolt is tightened.
Adjusting the distributor on a Tavria
The ignition system on the "Tavria" largely repeats the classic VAZ models:
- Determine TDC of the first cylinder.
- Align the marks on the pulley and cover.
- Set the rotor to the first cylinder.
- By turning the distributor housing, achieve the optimal ignition timing.
Fine-tuning
After initial installation, it is advisable to:
- Take a test drive and evaluate engine behavior.
- If detonation occurs during acceleration, the distributor should be turned slightly counterclockwise.
- If the engine "doesn't pull" and runs sluggishly, the distributor is turned clockwise.
Having mastered the distributor installation procedure, you can independently adjust the engine operation on a
VAZ 2106,
VAZ 2109,
Tavria, or
Audi 80, without going to a car service. The main thing is to accurately align the marks, correctly direct the rotor, and securely fasten the distributor.
