What is a lambda probe
A lambda probe is an oxygen sensor installed in the vehicle's exhaust system. It measures the oxygen content in the exhaust gases and transmits information to the engine control unit (ECU). This allows adjusting the fuel mixture for optimal combustion. Most vehicles have two probes installed:- the first - before the catalytic converter (regulating);
- the second - after the catalytic converter (monitoring its efficiency).
What will happen if you disconnect the lambda probe after the catalytic converter
Now let's consider the main question:what will happen if you disconnect the lambda probe after the catalytic converter? The second lambda probe does not directly participate in mixture adjustment; it only monitors how the catalytic converter works. If you disconnect this sensor:
- The "Check Engine" light will come on - the ECU will detect the absence of a signal.
- The engine will run, but operation in emergency mode is possible.
- Fuel consumption may increase - the control unit will not be able to accurately assess the quality of exhaust purification.
- The level of harmful emissions will increase.
What will happen if you disconnect the lambda probe on VAZ 2110
On VAZ 2110, especially with an injection engine, disconnecting the lambda probe will lead to the following consequences:- Transition to a rich mixture, since the ECU stops regulating fuel supply based on the probe readings.
- Increased fuel consumption (by 10-20%).
- Unstable operation at idle.
- Possible dips during acceleration, jerks.
- The engine error light will come on.
What will happen if you disconnect the lambda probe on Nissan Almera N16
In the case of Nissan Almera N16 (1.5, 1.8 liters):- When disconnecting the first probe (regulating), the engine immediately starts to run unstable.
- When disconnecting the second probe (after the catalytic converter) - the car continues to drive, but:
- error P0420 appears;
- fuel consumption increases;
- possible loss of power;
- the car may not pass the technical inspection due to exceeding exhaust norms.
Let's summarize
What will happen if you disconnect the lambda probe? In most cases - nothing critical, but:- Fuel consumption will increase;
- An engine error will appear;
- The engine may run unstable;
- The toxicity level of exhaust will increase;
- Possible problems with diagnostics and technical inspection.
