Nissan X-Trail: prices and specifications

5 generations Country of origin: Japan

History

The Nissan X-Trail became the first compact crossover in the company's history. It debuted in 2001. The model was based on a platform shared with the Nissan Almera and Nissan Primera. One of the distinctive features of the first-generation interior was the instrument panel located in the center of the dashboard.

In 2007, the second generation X-Trail (T31) saw the light. In it, the instruments returned to their usual place — behind the steering wheel. Additionally, the car was built on the new Nissan C platform, which was also used for the Nissan Qashqai.

According to the manufacturer, the X-Trail became the world's first car equipped with the ALL MODE 4x4-i system. This technology automatically redistributes additional traction depending on road conditions. In the US and Australian markets, the model is sold under the name Nissan Rogue.

The first generation (T30) was released in 2001 on the FF-S platform, taken from the Primera and Almera. Almost immediately after sales started in Japan, the crossover appeared in Europe and the US. It was designed for city dwellers who enjoy traveling on highways and going outdoors. Even in the base version, the X-Trail T30 came with four airbags, an audio system with CD player, power windows, and climate control.

When developing the second generation (T31), Nissan took into account the wishes and complaints of first-generation X-Trail owners. As a result, the car became larger, more spacious, and received a completely redesigned interior.

In 2010, the second-generation model underwent a facelift. Changes affected the front end: designers updated the radiator grille, headlights, and bumpers.

The precursor to the third generation was the Hi-Cross concept, shown in 2012. It hinted at the future design of the production crossover.

The production version of the third-generation X-Trail was introduced in the fall of 2013. The 2014 model was radically different from its predecessors. It lost its angular appearance and began to resemble a "reskinned" Nissan Murano. It was based on the Common Module Family (CMF) modular platform developed by the Renault-Nissan alliance. The new X-Trail III became even larger and more technologically advanced.

Exterior

The 2014 Nissan X-Trail looks elegant and presentable. Compared to previous versions, there is no trace of the former brutality and archaicness — only the name X-Trail remains.

The developers managed to visually elevate the model in class, bringing it closer to premium crossovers. Externally, the new X-Trail III may seem smaller than its predecessor, but it actually surpasses it in all dimensions. The increase in wheelbase is especially noticeable — it became 7.5 cm longer.

The silhouette of the new model evokes associations with the larger Nissan Murano. This suggests that the designers aimed to make the car attractive to a wider audience.

Interior

The interior of the latest X-Trail borrowed many features and details from Infiniti models. The quality of materials used in the trim has also noticeably improved.

The dashboard of the new X-Trail looks stylish and modern. The center console can be equipped with a large touchscreen for the Nissan Connect multimedia system. This display shows navigation information, which is linked to the Google search engine. Below the screen is the climate control unit.

The instrument panel features a separate 5-inch screen that displays the most necessary information for the driver: from navigation prompts to tips for economical driving and all-wheel drive mode.

Like its predecessor, the new model can be equipped with a panoramic roof. However, the 2014 X-Trail lost the signature drink holders hidden on the sides of the dashboard. Instead, there are regular cup holders on the center tunnel and compartments in the doors.

Unlike previous generations, the new crossover can be equipped with a third row of seats (optional). Access to the "gallery" is facilitated by rear doors that open almost 90 degrees. Additionally, for an extra charge, the tailgate can be equipped with a power drive.

According to the developers, the seatbacks in the new X-Trail have become thinner, which increased legroom for passengers. The middle row of seats is adjustable. The trunk has become more functional than its predecessor: previously there was one "underground" compartment, now the cargo area can have two "floors".

Engine and Transmission

For the previous generation X-Trail, two gasoline engines (2.0 and 2.5 liters) and one diesel — a 2.0-liter turbodiesel — were offered. Transmissions included manual, automatic, and CVT.

The 2014 X-Trail is equipped with a manual transmission or an upgraded Xtronic CVT. A classic automatic transmission is not available for this model.

In the US market, the new X-Trail is offered with a 2.5-liter gasoline engine producing 170 horsepower. In Europe, this engine will not appear — instead, smaller turbocharged units, including diesel ones, will be used.

The X-Trail III is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The all-wheel drive system is the same All Mode 4x4i, without significant changes. The drive type is selected using a rotary knob, as in its predecessors.

Safety

At the time of its release, the new Nissan X-Trail had not yet undergone EuroNCAP crash tests, but the company claimed that a high safety rating was guaranteed. This was not only due to passive safety but also thanks to many active systems.

The latest X-Trail introduced several new active safety systems:

  • Active Ride Control — adjusts shock absorber stiffness and reduces body roll;
  • Active Engine Brake — enhances engine braking;
  • Active Trace Control — monitors speed and steering angle, selectively brakes wheels to reduce understeer.

Features

Those who did not like the "boxy" Nissan X-Trail should pay attention to the design of the 2014 model. It looks more presentable, offers a different level of comfort, and the optional third row of seats combines the functionality of an SUV and a minivan.

Popularity in Ukraine

The Nissan X-Trail is among the top 5 best-selling mid-size crossovers in Ukraine, according to sales rankings.

Most Ukrainian X-Trail buyers choose gasoline versions. On the secondary market, diesel modifications are popular instead.

Our Verdict

The Nissan X-Trail is a spacious and comfortable crossover that should be included in the list of considered options. Getting acquainted with it will be useful even for those planning to buy a station wagon or minivan. The multifunctionality of the X-Trail can satisfy the most demanding customers, even those who previously considered cars of a different class.
