The thing is, a rotary-piston engine will be installed on the Mazda MX-30 electric crossover. It will not turn the wheels, but will become a generator powering the electric motor. A similar scheme was previously used in the BMW i3 and Chevrolet Volt.

Thus, the range of the Mazda MX-30 will double – from 200 to 400 km. Moreover, the Wankel engine is compact and light – it will not take up much space. The new version of the electric car will be offered in 2022.

The new Mazda MX-30 is one of the most affordable electric crossovers on the European market – it costs from 27.4 thousand euros. In addition to the 143-horsepower electric version, there is also a 150-horsepower hybrid variant.

Recall that Mazda has been producing models with the Wankel engine since 1967. The last such car was the Mazda RX-8 coupe, discontinued in 2012. By the way, it was from the RX-8 that the door scheme for the Mazda MX-30 was borrowed.
