The system installed on i3 models should reduce the time spent searching for free parking spaces on the street. It does this by using data on vehicle movement and a specially developed algorithm. As explained by the company, the system uses a database of parking meters and a map of public parking lots to calculate available spaces in a given area. This information is then displayed on a digital map. By looking at it, drivers can find a street where parking spaces are available.

As stated by the head of BMW's road technology and traffic management department, Martin Hauschild: "For people living in large cities, there is a clear need for a system that can predict parking availability on the street. Thanks to cooperation with INRIX (a company that services parking meters in major German cities), BMW Group intends to continue working in this direction, raising the bar for urban mobility to a new level in the future."
