In the UK, a landslide occurred between the cities of Bath and Bristol, damaging a section of the highway. According to road services estimates, restoring the road will take at least six months. The temporary detour route offered to drivers lengthened the journey by 22 kilometers.
This is where market mechanisms came into play. Local landowner Mike Watts figured out how to shorten the distance for drivers. He decided to build a private toll road stretching 365 meters.
Prices for passage are quite modest by British standards: 1 pound for motorcyclists, 2 pounds for cars, and 3 pounds for trucks. A subscription is also available — when paying for twelve trips, ten are counted. At the same time, the quality of the road leaves much to be desired even by Ukrainian standards.
Although building the dirt road cost the Briton 150,000 pounds, it brings him a steady income.
