The vehicle's protection level meets the VR6 standard — the car can withstand shots from weapons chambered for 7.62×39 mm ammunition, which is used, for example, in modifications of the Kalashnikov assault rifle (AK-47, AKM).

Additionally, the crossover's design can protect the driver and passengers from an explosive device of up to 15 kg in TNT equivalent, detonated at a distance of up to four meters. To achieve this level of protection, special panels made of high-strength steel were installed in the doors, side panels, roof, and the partition of the engine compartment.
Furthermore, the BMW X5 VR6 Protection uses special 30-millimeter glass that can withstand attacks from "any type of cold weapon." The chassis and luggage compartment are reinforced with special aluminum elements.

In addition, the crossover is equipped with 20-inch wheels with tires featuring reinforced sidewalls, allowing the vehicle to remain drivable even after a complete loss of tire pressure. Other equipment includes a self-sealing fuel tank, a hands-free communication system, and flashing beacons.
The BMW X5 VR6 Protection is powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbo gasoline engine producing 530 hp and 750 N·m of torque. The armored crossover can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, and its top speed is 210 km/h.
