The car is a production version of the five-seat Volkswagen Atlas Hybrid concept. Production of the vehicle will start in the USA in 2019 at the plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in parallel with the seven-seat Atlas.

The new model features a coupe-like body shape. The crossover received a plug-in hybrid drive (PHEV). The crossover's power is 360 hp. The electric-only range does not exceed 42 km. The second version of the car with a hybrid drive without the function of external battery charging (HEV) develops a power of 314 hp.

Also at the event, the public was shown a large pickup truck created based on the Atlas Tanoak concept car. The model received a gasoline engine with a power of 280 hp. The new model became the first Volkswagen pickup built on a modular platform with a transverse engine layout (MQB). Whether the concept will receive a production version in the future is still unknown.

The Volkswagen Atlas Tanoak was presented in spring 2018 at the New York auto show. The new model is based on the platform of the large Atlas crossover, which is sold in Russia under the name Teramont. The overall length of the pickup was 5436 mm, which is 381 mm longer than the Atlas. The width of the car exceeded two meters, and its height is 1829 mm. The wheelbase increased by 280 mm to 3251 mm.
