Toyota company also decided to actively compete with rivals in the electric car segment and is preparing to launch its own mass-market electric vehicle project.
The Japanese automaker had previously tried to create electric versions based on the RAV4 crossover (pictured) and a number of other cars, but they did not gain much demand.
Now Toyota intends to develop a production electric vehicle from scratch, without using an existing platform. The range of such a car will be 300 kilometers. Work on the project will begin next year, and the new product will reach the assembly line by 2020.
