Production of the BMW i8 started in 2014, and since then, over 20,000 units in coupe and roadster body styles have rolled off the assembly line at the Leipzig plant. This has made the model the world's most widespread sports car with a hybrid powertrain.

The BMW i8's hybrid system combines a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine and a compact electric motor. The combined output of the units reaches 374 horsepower and 570 N·m of torque. The car accelerates to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds, and the top speed is electronically limited to 250 kilometers per hour.
