This year, three models are vying for the main prize: the Kia Telluride crossover and two Mazda vehicles — the new Mazda3 and the compact SUV CX-30. The shortlist of finalists was formed based on a survey of 86 automotive journalists from various countries.
The jury also announced the list of contenders for victory in four separate categories: "City Car," "Luxury Car," "Sports Car," and "Best Design." Starting this year, a separate award for the most environmentally friendly car is no longer given.
In the "City Car" category, the competition will include the electric Kia Soul EV and MINI, as well as the Volkswagen T-Cross crossover. In the luxury segment, the main rivals will be the electric SUV Mercedes-Benz EQC and two Porsche models — the 911 sports car and the Taycan electric vehicle. The "Sports Car" category features exclusively Porsche cars: the 911, Taycan, and 718 Boxster GT4/Cayman GT4. And in the battle for the best design title, the Peugeot 208, Mazda3, and Porsche Taycan will meet.
Recall that last year, the title of absolute winner of WCOTY was won by the electric crossover Jaguar I-Pace, which beat the Audi e-tron and Volvo S60/V60 in the final.
