The title of best car of the year is claimed by the third-generation BMW 1-Series hatchback, the compact crossover Ford Puma, the new small models Peugeot 208 and Renault Clio, as well as the Toyota Corolla presented in a new generation. The list also includes two fully electric cars — the Porsche Taycan and the Tesla Model 3.
These cars were selected from an extended list that included more than 30 models. This year, the jury consisted of 60 press representatives from 23 countries, and each of them distributed 25 points among the nominees at their own discretion. The names of the finalists will become known in about a month, and the winner will be announced in March 2020 at the Geneva Motor Show.
It is worth noting that last year the winner of the competition was the electric crossover Jaguar I-Pace. For the first time in the history of the competition, which spans more than 50 years, the winner was determined only after the second round of voting — the Jaguar I-Pace and the French coupe Alpine A110 scored the same number of points (250 each). In the additional voting round, the participants preferred the British car.
