Last year, this figure was 1 million 281 thousand units.
Almost half of the two million electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids sold were in China. Europe took second place in terms of market volume, and North America rounded out the top three.
The absolute favorite among electric cars was the Tesla Model 3 — 145 thousand units were sold. Second place went to the Chinese model BAIC EC-Series, third to the Nissan Leaf. The fourth and fifth positions were taken by other Tesla models — S and X.
In 2018, the share of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids in global new car sales was 2.1%. Pure electric cars accounted for about 1% of the market. However, the situation varies greatly by country: for example, in Norway, electric vehicles already make up almost half of the market, while in some other countries their share is almost imperceptible.
